FREO SCORES BIG IN 2026 WA GOOD FOOD GUIDE AWARDS

19 February 2026

Foodies rejoice! Fremantle's hospitality scene continues to go from strength to strength in 2026, with a huge number of accolades for our port city in this year's WA Good Food Guide Awards.

From local institutions to already-beloved new kids on the block, check out the full list of winners below. How many have you visited?

2026 Pub of the Year: Gage Roads Freo

Two dads smiling with beers as the sun sets over the water in Fremantle at Gage Roads Freo

In just a few short years of operation, the Victoria Quay brewers and their historic A-Shed home have become a Fremantle must-do. Check the departure times hanging over the bar, grab a fresh-as-they-come beer, and head outside for a front-row seat to take in all the action of our working port.

But there's more than good times and great beer to be found at the iconic brewery, with a mouthwatering menu of tacos, ceviche, prawns, and more. (Yes, there's plenty of hot chippies too).

Best Bar Dining: H&C Urban Winery

A large bar and dining room with lots of greenery and colourful lights hanging from the ceiling, with lots of people socialising below.

Perth's first ever urban winery, H&C is a bar, restaurant, cellar door, and fully operational winery under one roof a (very) short walk from the city centre at the entrance to Fremantle's East End

The crew here produced their first vintage on site in 2025, but there's more than great wine coming out of this lush space. The kitchen is serving up some of the city's most spectacular dishes, including a beef tartare with cured egg and black garlic that will have you coming back again and again.

And making up The Top 100...

Bread in Common

You'll find Fremantle dining stalwart Bread in Common inside a former West End warehouse stripped back to its original brick. The award-winning venue is famed for its long communal tables, seasonal produce, and extensive wine list. If you haven't tried this long-loved Fremantle favourite yet, go ahead – it's time to break bread.

Cassia

A restaurant dining room with lush green and purple foliage overhead.

Celebrating the great Australian barbecue albeit in a slightly more refined fashion, you'll find Cassia serving up pure craftmanship in every dish and every drink right opposite Fremantle Oval in the historic Convict Quarter. Plates are all designed to be shared, just like the best Aussie barbecues, and celebrate all things local too with a WA-heavy drinks and produce list.

Emily Taylor

Also suitably nestled in the Convict Quarter, Emily Taylor takes its name from a trading ship that first brought tea and spices to WA via Asia in the 1800s. It's where Freo's maritime past meets its decidedly modern present. A bold, stylish, and cooked to perfection menu includes standouts like the lobster, prawn, and Manjimup black truffle dumplings and Massaman beef curry with coconut.

La Cabaña

cool, vintage, orange car passes La Cabana

A uniquely West Australian take on coastal Mexican, La Cabaña is where the in-the-know South Freo crowd go for tacos, tostadas, totopos, and a spicy marg that will knock your socks off. It's breezy service, immaculate vibes, and lush courtyard can quickly see an afternoon turn into an evening. Go see for yourself.

Lions and Tigers

Lions & Tigers interior

Housed in a two story heritage-listed West End warehouse, this fun, pan-Asian powerhouse has an intoxicating air of warmth, personality, and flavour that is impossible to walk past. The menu is full of South Asian spice and modern Australian creativity with every plate designed for sharing – if you can bare it.

Madalena's

madalenas

Awarded a prestigious three stars in this year's guide (reserved for venues achieving everything they set out to on all counts), this South Freo favourite will have you planning a return before you've even walked out the door. With exceptional seafood and a bohemian liveliness inspired by Brazil's botecos, Madalena's offers a masterclass in hospitality.

Nieuw Ruin

A trio of dishes on a dark wooden table with a glass of champagne being poured.

A little nostalgia and a lotta wine is the name of the game at this small Downtown bar and eatery headed up by rising star Blaze Young. Think super fresh, hyper-local produce, a menu designed to seamlessly shift from snacks at the bar to decadent dinners, and an eclectic and expansive beverage offering that's 300+ bottles strong.

Pearla & Co

Two chefs in black t-shirts and black aprons standing in front of a wine cabinet, smiling at the camera.

The latest outpost from chef Scott Bridger of Bib & Tucker fame, Pearla & Co may have only opened in North Freo in December last year but it's already garnering big accolades from critics and diners alike. Ethics and excellence in seafood is Bridger's ethos here and its evident in everything from the decor and service to the cracking dishes coming from the pass.

Shirley's

Shirley's Fremantle

Another new venture from a Fremantle hospitality veteran, Shirley's is a bar-cum-bistro right around the corner from chef Kenny McHardy's original outpost Manuka, between Walyalup Koort and the East End. Inspired by his wife's grandmother, Shirley's is all about comfort, home, warmth, and back-to-basics yet elegant cooking delivered with confidence and calm.

Suku

colourful, delicious Indonesian bowl, with rice, nuts, pickled veg and all the good stuff!

Ah, Suku. This small but mighty Indonesian eatery inside Walyalup Koort's FOMO precinct will transport you right to Bali with its simple menu comprised of just two dishes and a handful of sides and smaller plates. The perfect example of quality over quantity, their Nasi Bali and Rendang are both outstanding and include a meat and vegetarian option. Did we mention they serve Bintang?

Vin Populi

Foodies flock from across Perth to West End mainstay Vin Populi. You won't find a menu online, as the seasonal and ever changing menu is written up on a chalkboard for you to discover when you walk in the door. Grab yourself a seat at one of the highly-coveted street-side tables and while away an afternoon over salumi, fresh pasta, martinis, and vino.

Finally, closing out the Top 25 Bars and Pubs...

The Freo dominance continues into the Top 25 Bars and Pubs list. Joining Best Bar Dining winner H&C in the Top 25 Bars list is neighbourhood wine bar BWB, iconic pirate bar Darling Darling, The Old Synagogue's underground speakeasy L'Chaim, Greek vinyl bar Ode to Sirens, and local favourite Patio.

Alongside Pub of the Year Gage Roads in the Top 25 Pubs list is long-standing institution The Norfolk Hotel and new Irish haunt, Mons. O'Shea.
