Best in the Burbs: Cafe Edition

23 June 2026

Fremantle knows how to do coffee. That part is not up for debate. But just beyond the bustle of the Cappuccino Strip and the heritage streets lies a quieter, equally compelling café scene that spills into the suburbs.

Tucked along leafy streets, neighbourhood corners and coastal pockets, these cafés feel more local, more lived in.  If you are willing to venture a few minutes beyond the centre, here is where you will find some of Fremantle's best kept spots.

Lovers Deli & Canteen, White Gum Valley

Just off South Street, Lovers is a firm favourite with Freo locals. The schnitty has earned its reputation as one of Perth’s best, but in our opinion the green eggs and scram is the real standout. Expect consistently great food, excellent coffee, and that warm, unmistakable Freo service that makes every visit feel like catching up with a friend.

Hinata Café, Fibonacci Centre, Fremantle

Hinata Café is a hidden gem serves up a taste of home-style Japanese cooking that feels thoughtful and deeply comforting.  The seasonal menu is carefully considered, with every dish prepared with the kind of attention you would expect from a home kitchen.

The Cool Room Café, Fremantle

Tucked away on the corner of Holland and Onslow Street, The Cool Room is a secret gem with institution status.  Known for its strong breakfasts and laid back, unpretentious vibe, it is the kind of place where time slows down a little. Owner and award-winning chef Drew Dawson’s influence is clear across the menu.

Orange Box, Leighton Beach

Perched right by Leighton Beach, Orange Box is hard to beat for location alone. But it delivers on every front. Great food, good vibes, plenty of space to spread out, a playground for the kids, and the beach quite literally at your feet. You'll arrive in the morning and leave at dinner time.

Bruce Town & Ooh Coffee, North Fremantle

North Freo locals are spoiled for choice here, with Bruce Town and Ooh Coffee sitting side by side on the main strip. Bruce Town Café is a cozy, family-owned spot where good food and easy conversation go hand in hand.  Ooh is a 'next level' espresso bar known for great coffee and even better service, if that's possible.

Big Loaf Factory Bakery, O'Connor

Out in O'Connor, Big Loaf Factory Bakery is where the magic happens.  This is the source of their much-loved baked goods, where you can feast on pies, cinnamon buns and filled rolls to your heart's content. There is plenty of space, easy parking and a laid back, industrial feel that makes it an easy stop for families and anyone chasing quality bread, pastries and coffee.

Mumma Bee, Hilton

If you live in Hilton, you already know Mumma Bee.  If you do not, do yourself a favour and check out this sweet little spot serving house made cakes and all-day brunch.  It is cosy, welcoming and full of charm.  Find it in the heart of Hilton near the PCYC and Hilton Harvest.

Tinsmith Garage, Fremantle

On Stack Street, Tinsmith Garage blends custom cars with a low key coffee offering in a way that feels distinctly Fremantle. Set inside a working vintage Volkswagen restoration workshop, it is as much about craftsmanship as it is about a good flat white. Stop in for coffee, something to eat, or to browse apparel, and stay for the atmosphere of polished metal, ongoing builds and hands-on creativity.
