Every year, the streets of Fremantle fill with music, colour, faith and community spirit as the Blessing of the Fleet returns to Fishing Boat Harbour.
For locals, it's one of the city's most time-honoured traditions. For visitors, it's a unique opportunity to experience the rich maritime and multicultural heritage that helped shape Fremantle into the vibrant port city it is today.
More than a festival, the Blessing of the Fleet is a living link to generations of fishing families whose stories are woven into the fabric of Fremantle
A Tradition Born Across the Sea
The origins of the Blessing of the Fleet stretch back centuries to the coastal towns of southern Italy, particularly Madonna dei Martiri celebrations in Molfetta and the traditions of Capo d'Orlando in Sicily. These festivals honoured the Virgin Mary and sought protection for fishermen and their vessels before they ventured onto the often-unpredictable seas.
When Italian and Portuguese migrants arrived in Fremantle during the early and mid-20th century, they brought far more than fishing expertise. They brought language, culture, faith, family traditions and a deep connection to the sea. Many settled around Fishing Boat Harbour and became instrumental in developing Western Australia's fishing industry.

The Fremantle Beginning
The story of Fremantle's Blessing of the Fleet is often traced to Francesco Raimondi, a fisherman from Molfetta who migrated to Fremantle in 1925. According to local accounts, on 8 September 1943 he encouraged fellow fishermen to remember the feast day being celebrated in their hometown and attend Mass rather than heading out to sea.
The following year, a small gathering of around 60 people came together for a Mass and community dance, laying the foundations for what would become one of Fremantle's most enduring cultural events.
By 1948, the celebration had evolved into an organised annual festival and has continued ever since, becoming a cherished fixture on Fremantle's calendar.

Celebrating a Working Harbour
Fishing Boat Harbour has been at the heart of Fremantle's maritime life for more than a century. Officially established in 1924, it grew into a bustling centre of Western Australia's fishing industry, sustained largely by migrant fishing communities from southern Europe.
The Blessing of the Fleet pays tribute to this legacy. It honours the generations of fishermen, deckhands, boat builders and families whose livelihoods depended on the ocean and whose contributions helped establish Fremantle as Australia's foremost fishing port.
The Procession and Blessing
Today, the festival remains centred around the traditional blessing ceremony.
Following Mass at the iconic St Patrick's Basilica, a procession carrying the statue of the Madonna makes its way through Fremantle's streets towards Fishing Boat Harbour. Accompanied by community groups, musicians, families and visitors, it is one of the city's most visually striking annual events.
At the harbour, fishing vessels gather on the water to receive a blessing for a safe and prosperous season ahead. The ceremony reflects the respect fishermen have long held for the sea and acknowledges both its generosity and its risks
