HERITAGE FESTIVAL 2026: What's the Story about Cantonment Hill?

04 March 2026
What’s so special about Cantonment Hill/Dwerda Weelardinup? Join Steve Anstey, resident historian and former Head of History at the WA Museum for a walk back in time.

Cantonment Hill/Dwerda Weelardinup is recognisable as the location of the Signal Station that overlooks the construction works of our new old bridge. It has always been a popular spot to visit because of the marvellous views of the river and the sea. For this History walk Steve Anstey, resident historian and former WA Museum Head of History, will walk you through many of the colourful events that took place on the Hill. You will gain a greater understanding of its significance and of the history of Fremantle.

Meet at the top of the Naval Store stairs, in Tuckfield Park. Please wear comfortable footwear as some of the terrain is rough. At the end of the walk, there will be the opportunity to visit the Signal Station, now the Fremantle Marine Rescue headquarters.
