Affordable places to eat in Fremantle - food is a vibrant part of Fremantle's culture and casual dining plays a big part in that. Thanks to Perth's mild climate you can eat outdoors almost all year round. There are indoor and outdoor markets and a whole host of street food venues and mobile eateries available.
Fremantle Markets
Taking up a huge swathe of real estate, from South Terrace to William Street, the Fremantle Markets are a city landmark and a foodies delight. Whatever time of day you happen to be there (Friday, Saturday and Sundays), you can always discover great food. The main areas for street eats are on the South Terrace side and The Yard which is accessed by entrances of Henderson Street Mall, Parry and William Streets. It's there that you will find authentic Vietnamese, Spanish and a host of other international cuisine. If you fancy something sweet, there is honey cakes and rice-bran donuts and of course Michelle's crepes. In The Yard you can find the Fluffy Lamb, named as one of the top Indonesian restaurants in the world! Everyone has their favourite Ramen spot, but none can compete with Dosukoi. This tiny place only seats 13 people and is very popular, but when you order you can leave your mobile number and they will SMS you when your food is ready, that way you don't have to waste precious minutes waiting. Dosukai has something of a cult-following in Perth. Once you dine there, you'll discover why it is very well-deserved.
E Shed Markets
E Shed Markets, down in historic Victoria Quay, offers a shopping and dining experience against the backdrop of Fremantle's working port. While the markets might look unassuming on the outside, inside you'll find some extraordinary antiques, a variety of retail outlets and traditional tasty food.
Old Shanghai
The Old Shanghai Fremantle is a staple for locals looking for quality and value for money. The shed is filled with an eclectic mix of Asian cuisine including Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Malaysian and Indian dishes. If you are inclined to imbibe, there is also a bar on the premises.
Freo Farmers Market (Sundays)
See where the locals go to get farm fresh and organic produce at Freo Farmers Market. There is also a wide range of food trucks on-site, so you can take your pick of healthy or hearty food that's sure to satisfy. Pick up some Sunday morning toasted tucker, listen to live music, and have a fair-trade coffee or fresh juice to finish off with. Everything is fresh at Freo Farmers.
South Beach Sunset Markets (December-March)
Situated on the grassed area at South Beach, the Sunset Markets have more to offer than just food. Go there for the atmosphere, the sunset (of course), and family friendly fun. There is live music, kids' entertainment, an animal farm and face painting to keep the little ones happy and occupied, giving you time to enjoy some fine food truck fodder and a quiet bevvy from the pop-up bar.
Under the Bridge – Freo Food Trucks (seasonal)
Come down to East Street jetty and watch the spectacular sunset overlooking the Swan River and Fremantle Harbour while selecting your dinner from a choice of five food trucks. A family-friendly event, it's best to leave the alcohol behind for this one. Rudimentary tables and chairs are available. Come early to secure a spot.
