Fremantle sits pretty between the ocean and the river. Water is part of our DNA, so it follows that activities and adventure set on our gorgeous watery expanses are a bit of a specialty.
If you want to get wet, the Stand Up Surf Shop in North Fremantle offers lessons in stand up paddle boarding, and there’s a SUP school every weekend on the flat waters of the Swan River. On a surf board, there’s often a winter surf break at Sandtrax Beach, overlooked by the port’s famous cranes.
Going under? Dive Ski & Surf Supplies at E-Shed have everything you need and offer qualification courses and charters. Bucket List Diver also does scuba diving charters to Rottnest and Carnac Islands, where caves and swim throughs make for great underwater viewing.
Fishing charters from Fremantle cater to serious deep sea anglers, as well as families wanting to fish close to the reef. Snapper, dhufish and King George Whiting are among the typical bounty on day-long fishing charters departing from Freo’s Capo D’Orlando Drive during summer.
In winter and spring, you can join a tour with Whale Watch Western Australia to see humpbacks and Southern Right whales making their annual migration along the Indian Ocean. Dolphins, seals and migratory birds are added perks.
Fremantle is the launching point for Rottnest Island, one of our most treasured neighbours. You can reach it by ferry in 30 minutes to enjoy its turquoise bays and laid-back coastal vibe. Ferries depart from the B-shed, which is also home to the Sail Training Ship Leeuwin II. Day trips on the three-masted 1850’s-style barquentine ship can be booked when the vessel is in port.
For a relaxed river encounter, take a Captain Cook Cruise along the Swan River from Fremantle to Perth. One way or return, you choose – it’s scenic whichever way you look.
