You’re stocking up, but you’ve got a taste for something special. Something other than off-the-shelf supplies; something top notch yummy. Fremantle’s gourmet stores can oblige.
You may not have known you wanted baklava or Turkish delight, but you’ll probably leave Kakulas Sister with a bag anyway, as well as some olive oil, specialty tea, nuts and pulses. It’s a classic European grocer and you’ll smell the wares from 200 paces. Once you’ve set foot inside Little Sister next door, there is simply no wanting for amazing cheese and charcuterie. Pre-dinner is sorted.
Beyond the gift wares at the Fremantle Markets is The Yard, a fresh food market flanked by specialty traders. Find cheese, bread, meat, fish, wholefoods and other staples – and perhaps just one donut for the road. If it’s healthy wholefoods and vats of honey or olive oil you’re seeking, hit up The Storehouse in South Fremantle.
Galati & Sons delicatessen is a fixture on Wray Avenue. Locals flock here for inexpensive fresh provisions and aisles of treats, from Buffalo mozzarella to Italian prosciutto to passata and, well, milk. It’s the basics, plus Europe. Next door at Franks Gourmet Meats, delight in the chaotically busy signage as much as the offerings: camel, duck, rabbit and goat, plus all the less exotic stuff.
At Peaches, find a whole organic section and aisles full of specialty chocolates, crackers, cheese and top quality fresh provisions. If your taste buds are tending oriental, the Fremantle Mini Mart can sort you out with everything from dried shitakes to lemongrass and real deal fish sauce.
Inside the Raw Kitchen is the Zero Store. If your heart sings when you buy no plastic, head here for earth-friendly beauty and cleaning ingredients, kitchen wares and fermenting supplies.
Just want great, artisan bread? Wild Bakery will not disappoint. Memorable loaves and sweet treats can also be found at Bread in Common and Abhi's Bakery.
