Beaches - sun, surf and serenity, Fremantle is home to some of Western Australia's most stunning beaches. Whether you prefer the lively beaches of South Fremantle or the more relaxed beaches to the north, you're bound to find a stretch of white sand with your name on it. Go for a swim, grab a bite at a beachside cafe and, if it's late afternoon, settle in for a sunset show like no other.
South Beach, Ocean Drive
South Beach is a popular choice for tourists and locals alike. Set along the Fremantle bike trail and conveniently located a stone's throw away from the buzzing South Terrace strip of modern eateries, South Beach boasts everything you could want in a beach. You'll find tall Norfolk pines that provide shade and a spot to relax under, grassy lawns and free BBQ facilities that encourage visitors to make their own carnivore cuisine. Alternatively, in the summer months, simply head down on a Saturday when the food trucks are out for the South Beach Sunset Markets (December-March) and enjoy an impromptu picnic with an ocean sunset view.
*A free bus service operates between the city centre and South Beach, year round and 7 days a week - check Transperth website for a timetable.
Bathers Beach, Mews Road
A short stroll away from the main hub of Fremantle, popular inner–city Bathers Beach is one of Perth's best and least known beaches. Walk up the wooden promenade, take in the smell of freshly cooked fish and chips wafting out of Twin Fin, pass the sandy beachgoers outside Bathers Beach House (granted Australia's very first beach al fresco licence) and then take time to admire the striking Kidogo Arthouse and the colourful changing sheds beside. It's the beach every town wished they had.
Leighton and Port Beach, Port Beach Road
North Fremantle has myriad coastal offerings for avid lovers of sun, surf and sand. Blessed with long stretches of white sand and glistening turquoise waters, Port and Leighton beaches are considered by many to be some of the best in WA. It feels like a locals' hangout–calm and comfortable, with its regular motley crew of early morning swimmers, joggers and cyclists, frolicking families, pet owners playing with their furry friends in the unrestricted areas, and thrill-seeking surfers riding powerful waves.
The crop of delectable seaside eateries (Bib & Tucker, Coast Port Beach and The Orange Box) add a touch of sophistication to the laid-back atmosphere. After a while, you'll get the feeling that these northern beaches are a bit of a local secret. Well, the secret is out, claim your spot on the sand, lay down your towel, set up your beach umbrella and enjoy a day beside the seaside.
*Leighton Beach is a five minute walk from North Fremantle train station.
