Fremantle is an easy city to explore by bike. Dedicated bicycle lanes throughout the city and shared cycle paths running north, south and along the Swan River make it easy for cyclists to move around. Although Fremantle is built on a series of hills, the most interesting parts of the city and the popular things to do are easily accessible by bikes including the historic West End precinct, Fishing Boat Harbour, Maritime Museum, Fremantle Prison and Fremantle Market.

Dedicated bicycle lanes throughout the city and shared cycle paths running north, south and along the river make it easy for cyclists to move around.

Some basic rules for cyclists in Western Australia are:

  • wear an approved bike helmet
  • don’t travel too close to the rear of a moving vehicle
  • don’t  hold onto another moving vehicle or be towed by one
  • bicycles are not to be ridden on a freeway
  • don’t ride more than two bicycles abreast on a road
  • use the correct hand signals to turn left or right and to stop
  • don’t ride in a pedestrian mall
  • don’t ride on a footpath if over 12 years old (under 12 year olds can ride on a footpath).

For more information on cycling rules and safety visit the Department of Transport website

A comprehensive series of maps are available on The Department of Transport website that includes cycle ways and paths along the Experience Perth coast and Swan River.
